OMP Cloudstack meeting minutes, Sep 21, 2018

Mike MacIsaac

Sep 21, 2018  Open Mainframe Project Cloudstack meeting  11:00AM EDT

Attendees:  Mike M, Mike F, Neale F, John Mertic, John Arwe

Agenda:

1. Mike Friesenegger of SUSE presented on GitHub
-) You can fork a repository
-) Get code local to machine => Cone or Download =>
   -) git clone https://github.com/<user>/python-zvm-sdk.git
-) README.rst file - restructured text format => the "Atom" tool can edit .rst files
-) A repository can also be forked using a Graphical interface with Atom
-) Mike fixed a bug in the Documentation and created a branch.
-) Mike created a pull request and showed the changes that were displayed.

2. Reivew of RESTful API document:

No review occurred.  Rather, it was agreed that more work on this document, and the remain meetings scheduled this year are not worth pursuing.
The differences between the terminology and the API calls between the z/VM Cloud Connector and zoom are substantial.  There is no logical middle ground.
Whether this group will be reincarnated, or a new one formed will be determined by the OMP powers-that-be.

Thanks for all who participated this year. I appreciated everyone's input. But as John Mertic says:  “Some groups just run their course”.

Thanks.

John Mertic

Thanks Mike MacIssac for the notes and all your hard work in driving this group forward!

Looking at next steps for the group, considering that the TSC has accepted z/VM Cloud Connector as an Inbubation stage project, we discussed a few options:

1) Disband this group, and fold the work on build an API standard into the z/VM Cloud Connector project
2) Have this group focus on the spec building independently of the z/VM Cloud Connector project, but with the intention of the z/VM Cloud Connector being a reference implementation.
3) Have this group work with the z/VM Cloud Connector project on a governance structure that enables representation on both sides, with the intent of both groups working collectively on driving an API spec and z/VM Cloud Connector being a reference implementation.

My suggestion is for the group to discussion options over the coming 2 weeks, and then bring this up at the TSC meeting on October ( which I am discussing moving to October 4th due to the board meeting on October 10th ).

Let me know if this makes sense and everyone's opinion on the options proposed.

Thank you,

James Vincent

Hello John,

My opinion would be to pursue Option 1.  I have conversed with some of the Cloud Connector folks and find that they have all been willing to improve the API foundation for the z/VM community.  I would be very interested to join in the z/VM Cloud Connector project and participate in the work.

I still strongly believe it would be very beneficial to have a common framework for both clients and hosts of z/VM cloud management. Providing a nearly “plug and play” solution for customers goes a long way to making the z/VM platform remain a strong and viable hosting platform.

Just to comment - I've seen other projects generally use both tools for communicating. Slack seems to be prefered for more instant collaboration, while email is used for longer discussion and voting. There is way to integrate emails into Slack I believe, but not as much the other way around.

I like option 1 from the options that John Mertic proposed.   I also think using both email and Slack is good for the reasons that already been said.

Just to comment - I've seen other projects generally use both tools for communicating. Slack seems to be prefered for more instant collaboration, while email is used for longer discussion and voting. There is way to integrate emails into Slack I believe, but not as much the other way around.

Right now we do have a Slack channel folks can use at https://openmainframeproject.slack.com/messages/C5GTMN4LV

If you don't have a Slack account, head to slack.openmainframeproject.org to get one first.

As for email - this mailing list can serve that purpose if that's fine with the group.

Thank you,
